Here’s a little-known restoration fact: soaking your dentures overnight is actually a crucial part of their everyday care. Though you are supposed to wear them for most of the day, they’re not meant to be in your mouth 24/7. These four reasons to drop your dentures in an approved cleaning solution before you “hit the sack” will help you see why!

#1. You’ll Give Them a More Thorough Cleaning

If you already clean and rinse your dentures on a regular basis, then you might be wondering how much “cleaner” they could possibly get while soaking. As it turns out, the answer is “a lot!”

Like most objects, dentures have tiny pours on the surface that can trap stains and bacteria. Your toothbrush and soap can reach through some of those pours, but not as many as a liquid cleaning solution that’s specifically designed to do so.

#2. They’ll Maintain Their Fit

Let’s say you remove your dentures at night, but don’t soak them. Instead, you leave them in a protective case or other secure storage container. The problem with this is that dry air can make denture materials shrink and warp. Keeping them moist with a good soak will ultimately help them maintain their fitted shape.

#3. Your Gums Need a Break

The most important reason to soak your dentures throughout the night has to do with giving your gums a break. Since dentures rely on suction to stay in place on top of your gums, they slow proper circulation to your pink oral tissue. This limits how well they can absorb nutrients that promote healing. Taking your dentures out literally helps your gums breathe, keeping them healthy and preventing chronic irritation and sores.

#4. Help Your Dentures Last Longer

If you want to get as much out of your dentures as possible, then soaking them overnight is the way to go. By thoroughly cleaning out bacteria, helping them to maintain their size and shape, and preserving your gum health, you’ll promote the longevity of your dentures and ultimately require fewer trips to the dentist. Clearly, a little care and maintenance goes a long way!
